Adzuki rice porridge for the morning after a party: what it does in yakuzen, and the recipe
Adzuki porridge turned up at the end of episode 9. Plenty of people must have seen it and wanted a bowl.
In fact, adzuki porridge makes sense in yakuzen terms too. On the morning after a party, when the body feels vaguely heavy, this porridge is gentle on the stomach and exactly right.

Adzuki is a yakuzen ingredient that drives out excess fluid
In yakuzen, adzuki belongs to the water-draining, damp-percolating group, as it is called.
These are held to drain the excess fluid, or damp, that builds up in the body. That is the idea.
The morning after drinking a lot at a party, when you swell up or your stomach feels heavy,
the pairing of adzuki and porridge probably showed up to reset the body.

Good on a busy morning: easy adzuki porridge started in a flask
A little work the night before and a bowl your body is glad of is ready in the morning.
Ingredients (serves 1)
- Water: 300 to 400 ml
- Adzuki beans: 2 tbsp
- Rice: 2 tbsp (or 100 g frozen cooked rice)
- Salt: a pinch
- A soup flask or vacuum flask that holds heat
Method
The night before
- Put the adzuki and water in a small pan and bring to the boil over a fairly high medium heat.
- Once boiling, take it off the heat, pour it straight into the flask and leave it warm for six to eight hours.
Finishing in the morning
3. The adzuki will have swollen to about three times the size and be almost soft.
4. Tip it into a small pan with its liquid, add washed rice or frozen cooked rice and simmer.
5. Once it thickens and is cooked through, season with salt and it is done.
I have shown this recipe before on Instagram Live too.

Settle mind and body with one bowl in the morning
This bowl brings together what adzuki does in yakuzen with the gentleness of porridge.
On a morning when you think you may have eaten or drunk a bit much, it should quietly settle both mind and body.
Let us start today with a gentle breakfast too.
