What is the qi deficiency constitution?

Qi deficiency is a state short on the body's energy, its qi. In Chinese medicine, qi is the source of everything the body does: breathing, digestion, regulating temperature, resilience, concentration. When it runs short, a lack of vigour shows through the whole body.

Signs often seen in the qi deficiency constitution:

  • You wake in the morning still tired
  • Little stamina; you wear out quickly
  • You catch colds easily and shake them off slowly
  • A quiet voice; talking tires you quickly
  • Sleepy after meals; a weak stomach and intestines
  • Drive that will not hold; often vacant

These come from a shortage of qi. It is not a matter of your character; your body is telling you to rest more and take on more nourishment.

Self-care for the qi deficiency constitution

1. Make a point of days when you do not push

People of the qi deficiency constitution are in fact often the ones who push hardest. They tend to get through on willpower, and the strain drains more qi still, which becomes a vicious circle.

At times like that, deliberately set aside a day of doing nothing, or time to go slowly. Drink tea without looking at your phone, take a walk, pay attention to your breathing. Making a way of spending time that does not drain your qi into a habit is what matters That is all.

2. Put sleep and rest first

Qi recovers at night. Going to bed late, sleeping lightly and an irregular rhythm are major reasons qi deficiency gets worse.

  • Be in bed by 11pm
  • Eat an easily digested dinner, and eat it early
  • Phone and computer off an hour before bed

Even this alone changes how much you have in reserve the next day.

3. Replenish qi by eating so as to settle the stomach and intestines

Producing qi depends on the Spleen, that is, the stomach and intestines. When digestion and absorption are weak, what you eat does not turn into qi. So caring for the qi deficiency constitution starts with the gut.
